PA students win grant to attend conference

Physician Assistant (PA) students Kristina Jennings and Ashley Meerschaert received grants from the Michigan Academy of PAs to attend a leadership conference in Virginia.

The Leadership and Advocacy Summit in early March provides a way for PA students to meet other PA students and network with practicing PAs from across the country, said Amy Dereczyk, chair of Detroit Mercy’s PA program.

Dereczyk said it’s important for current students to attend events like the Leadership and Advocacy Summit as students.

“The practice laws in Michigan are far superior to the practice laws in other states,” Dereczyk said. “It is important for students to learn how to advocate for the profession, including lobbying their representatives in congress when proposals come up that will affect our profession. Having our students participate in these kinds of summits builds leadership and character. Our students develop these traits throughout our program and when they graduate they are practice ready.”
