During this assembly, the International Association of Jesuit Universities (IAJU) was formally launched and Fr. Arturo Sosa, S.J., Superior General of the Society of Jesus, addressed the assembly.

The IAJU is an organization of institutions affiliated with the Society of Jesus that are members of their conference-wide association of Jesuit higher education institutions. Participants include the chief executive officer of institutions (president, rector or principal), who will serve as the organization’s official representative.

During the assembly, a range of topics were discussed, including Inter-religious dialogue and understanding; formation for leadership in an Ignatian way of proceeding; peace and reconciliation; civic and political leadership; education of the marginalized; and others. Task Force reports have already been prepared and will be the foundation of the discussions.

Dr. Garibaldi’s attendance and the University’s participation in the IAJU helps to strengthen the Jesuit and Mercy traditions and values of Detroit Mercy.
